"Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy." ~ Thomas Merton
Love Anyway.
Yesterday I had the honor of taking part in a Christening at our little country church. My husband is a minister and became the pastor there last spring.
In his long career as a minister, this was his first time officiating a Christening. We were both so excited to take part in such a special occasion as we welcomed a brother and sister into the family of God. One is a toddler, and the other is an infant. They did not understand why all eyes were upon them, or why some dude sprinkled water on their heads.
As I watched it all unfold, I thought about how their little lives are just beginning. All they understand right now is when they are hungry, sleepy or need a diaper changed. Yet, love surrounds them, and I must believe they feel it, even if they do not comprehend the meaning yet.
Christians entered the season of Lent last week. For some, Lent is the time we must “give up” something for forty days. While it is a time of inner reflection, it is also a time of hope. Hope that the clouds and grey of winter depart, and the green and sunshine of spring peeps its head out. That is what love does. Love is the light that forever illuminates the dark abyss.
This winter has been unusually hard on my health. I have spent the past three weeks in bed dealing with a minor health issue. Yesterday was the first day I was able to leave the house for somewhere other than the doctor’s office. My soul was immediately uplifted to see my church family and friends. I felt their love flow over me.
The days of pain, anxiety and frustration floated away as my friends hugged my neck and told me how happy they were to see me. It gave me hope and renewed my mindset that while life has many bumps and trials, it also is full of beauty, love and hope.
If you are in a dark time of despair, do not fret my friend. It will pass and the sun will crack through those clouds. Our time of darkness is our opportunity to think about what is truly important; what may need to change or what we need to muster the courage to try.
Even we are down. Even when others mistreat us. Even if the world feels dark and scary. Love anyway.
Love is what sees us through. Our country is dealing with many challenges, our towns have struggles, our relationships need healing and our hearts need peace.
Love wins and always whispers, love anyway.
Amen!!!!
Yes, the energy of love is a salve for the soul.
So sorry that you have been so ill. What a blessing though that you were able to attend this precious moment at your church. Was so surprised to hear that it was the first Baptism that Cas performed. So happy for both of you and may you find comfort knowing family and friends are praying for better health for you. Love and hugs
Hey Sis, actually is was his first Christening….he had done adult baptisms, but never a Christening. It was so sweet!
