“Life has to end; love doesn’t.” ~ Mitch Albom
When Death Comes Knocking.
Most of the Midwest and south are experiencing winter weather. We went to bed last night seeing many stuck on highways in the snow. I said a little prayer for them as I snuggled deeper in my nice, dry, warm bed. Being cold-natured, I could not think of anything worse than spending a night stuck in my vehicle in the middle of a snowstorm.
Mother Nature and her weather patterns can be a lot like death. You never know when it may show up or how bad it will be. I recently blogged about three friends going through a loss of a spouse/partner. I’m sure none of them had death on their calendars.
This morning, we had an early visitor. His name is Alex, and he is an agent for whole-term life insurance. My husband had completed an inquiry asking for more information. Little did he expect Alex to show up at our front day on a cold Monday morning. Talk about a cold call!
We gave one another the “stink eye” and politely invited Alex in to give his spill. He did so quickly after getting the “I am working, how long is this going to take.” Alex, I may add, looked young enough to be our grandchild.
As we went through the process of getting qualified, I thought about life and my goal of cultivating joy. Signing up for death benefits was not exactly what I had in mind; but I recognize that it will take a burden off our shoulders should one of us die. It’s never something you want to dwell on, but at our age, it makes sense.
Now that things are in place, I can focus less on the “what ifs” and spend more time doing all the things we hope to do together and individually.
Have you made any plans for your end of life? Do you have a will? Instructions written down that explain what you would like to happen, or not should you die?
I know this is an odd topic, but we all need to make plans. Eventually, we will all pass on and I hate to think of the mess I would leave for someone else to deal with. My art closet and book collection alone are enough to bring on a panic attack.
While we endure the artic weather, I hope you will stay off snowy highways, stay warm and spend a few minutes putting your wishes down on paper.
The last thing anyone wants is for death to come knocking.
Caring enough to offer an Earth walk realty check is an authentic gift. Well done, my Friend.
